I've also heard of marking over the Sharpie with a dry erase marker and wiping it off with a soft cloth. I've seen someone use that method, but this was something that was recently signed. I have no idea if it works after it's set in for a while.

I once witnessed a guy cleaning a Staedtler Lumocolor signature from a glossy baseball card with one of those first-aid alcohol wipes. The signature was a day old, and the card was fine.

EDIT: I left this site and went to a sports BB site and the same basic topic was just brought up. Someone posted this site but I have no idea how safe or effective it is: http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/re ... -surfaces/

You might try to ask someone at a photo lab, maybe at a community college. The people who work at these usually know how to or know someone who does. Try an independent camera shop(if one still exists in your area). Obviously try it on a junk picture first.

About 10 minutes ago I successfully removed a personalization with some Acetone on a Q-tip. It did not ruin the picture or the rest of the autograph. The only thing is that you can see a bit of an indentation where the celeb pressed down when signing, but it is not that noticeable.

I have removed personalizations before with the same method before and I have not had any issues.

If you aren't comfortable trying, DON'T DO IT! It would be awful to attempt it and mess up your auto :( I was terrified the first few times I did it. I spent a good 30-40 minutes signing ugly old pictures of myself and practicing on them lol!

You can still see a bit of the "y" above the word "wishes". I just left it there because I used up my last Q-tip getting the rest of the personalization off. All of the coloring above the signature looks exactly as it did before I removed the name.

Technically, I stole it from my dad's workbench lol

I know you can get it at a tool/hardware store. It comes in a container like this:

Yeah, I find it easiest to use a Q-tip so you can be precise and not erase the wrong thing!

Like I said, I would definitely practice on an old photo before taking it to your autographs if you are unsure. You may have to rub kind of hard with the Q-tip if the celeb pressed down hard when signing. Sometimes it won't get it all the way off, but I have had success with acetone.
