it keeps saying the avatar is too big, how do i get it to work?

All avatars are now required to be 90x90 pixels. Took me a while to realize it myself. So you need to resize it. I used photobucket and it easily resized it for me to the appropriate size. I'm sure there are other sites, but that's the one I used.
