Bucky Dent partial success...

Unread post by mrgoo1 »

I wrote to Mr. Dent about a week and a half ago asking him to sign an 8x10, 88 Topps card and permission to send my Yankee World Series MVP ball. He signed my 8x10, but no sign of the Topps card or the question card. And to think I passed on a $17 signed Dent ball on eBay. Oh well. Last night I bought a signed Dave Parker ball for $15.50. Anyway, here's the scan:

Nice success on the photo. I wonder if part of the reason he didnt sign the card or answer your question is because a typical fan would want 1 autograph. With you asking for 2 autographs, plus wanting to send a multi-signed ball to him to get signed. He might be thinking the same thing that I am.. that you might be trying to make money off of his name and fame. I am not saying thats what you're doing, but 1 is usually enough for a fan. Maybe hold off a couple months and send him the card. I wouldn't send the ball though, you might lose it. I would save that for a card show to get signed.

While I respect your post, I must somewhat disagree with you, at least for me, personally. I understand making a quick buck by getting multiple autographs. But for me, personally, the bigger a fan of someone I am, the more autographs I want of them! lol

Congrats to the OP.
Feedback is always welcomed and appreciated!

I collect signed Hall of fame postcards and 8x10 photos signed by baseball Hall of Famers and I'm always looking to add to my collection with players I don't have yet.

And while I respect you post I must ask.... You said you somewhat agree with me, so where do you agree with me? LOL I have been a collector of autographs for over 20 years and I am a lifelong and die hard Yankees fan. Shoot, my wedding theme was all Yankees including a cake of Yankee Stadium. I understand how more autographs is better, but I am looking at it in a way that the player might be looking at it. If you were a former athlete and you received mail requesting more than 1 autograph, and considering how huge ebay is and how people are making money like they are by selling them.. you would be willing to sign more then 1 at a time? I think thats also why athletes now charge, so if anyone is going to make money off of their sigs, that its them. I was just saying spread it out a little and not request more then 1 at a time. I still wouldnt send the ball, lol.

The way I agree with you is how you see it from the player's perspective. From what I've seen from players signing in person, you are totally correct. If someone wants more than one, he is red flagged. And for that matter, if the person asks for the sweet spot, you can tell the player gets uneasy. Heck, when I got Mike Scioscia on a mini helmet on saturday(post in the inperson area) I asked him to sign it on the bill and for some reason, I don't think he liked that. And while I like getting as many autographs as possible, I agree with the spread it out statement. I can't remember ever sending more than one item to a player, thats just my deal. The way I look at it is, do I go and make sure I get one or risk it trying to get more and end up with nothing? I'll take the one!

And, by the way, I'm a lifetime Angel fan, but Yankees are a close second favorite for me (unusual, I know) and I am totally jealous of your wedding, especially the cake! At my wedding, the last song played was Sinatra's New York, New York because we went to New York on the honeymoon.

You guys are funny. Would a museum have only one Monet? Roy Sievers has signed many of my things, and Virgil Trucks has signed 2 balls, 2 hats and sent me 4 signed cards in total. I send scans of my display just to show I'm not in it for a quick buck. I've been collecting for years as well (not some kiddie chasing rumors of Justin Bieber). I have a friggin museum of autographs that I would love to open to the public one day. I understand your guys points of view, and Mr. Dents. Thats why I ALWAYS ask permission BEFORE I send a ball. I'm just thrilled he signed my unauthorised copy of an official MLB photo...HAHAHAHAHA. So I'll wait till he goes to a trade show and get it through a mail order service... other people who make money on others fame. This is why I don't post. Someone thinks they know what others think just because they've collected squiggles for a "long time". My first autograph was when I was 4 and I'm 39 now... longer than 20 years. Sugar Ray Leonard at a Burger King. And Mr. Dent kept the card. I guess it was missing from his collection. Nice trade.
As far as multi-signed balls, I have many. I just recieved my '64 Cardinals WS ball back from Curt Simmons. It's also been signed by Ray Sadecki (I'm sending it to a trade show to get signed by Lou Brock and Bob Gibson). I also have 2 '81 Dodgers WS ball signed by 7 players, an '82 Cardinals signed ball with Whitey Herzog, Lonnie Smith and Ozzie Smith, a ROY ball signed by 4 people.... getting a cramp writing all the signed baseballs. Thing is, not my first rodeo. I know what Mr. Dent probably thought... nice collection (I sent scans and photos so he could see it was for real). And if they don't want me to send anything else, I give my time and money to others. Besides, I like the Red Sox. Maybe I'll do my voodoo on the 'Yanks... LOL! Worked on the 49ers.

I didn't mean any of my comments to come down on you or what you do. If they did, I apologize. Just agreeing with the other poster about what players thought. I didn't want to generalize you with the quick buck crowd. In fact, I don't care what you do with your autographs! Its not my position to judge. I got Torii Hunter x3 in person last week, and nothing will be sold. It is what it is, and it always depends on the player. It's a shame how the hobby is changing. I started when I was 9 in 1995 and in just 16 years, the baseball autograph hobby has done a complete 360. It's getting harder every year.

BTW, good luck with your museum...I got a room in my house that I call my "Hall of Fame."

We should open up a museum... I will toss in my collection... 114 baseballs, 93 of which are HOF'ers, over 200 8x10's, 3 signed jerseys, signed bats, signed baseball and football helmets, signed footballs and some artwork. Most of my collection is in person items and probably half of my collection is Yankee stuff. As for doing your "voodoo," go for it, you can consider it payback for when Bucky did his "voodoo" on the Red Sox in 1978, LOL.. Sorry.. couldnt pass that one up. I think it is cool you actually ask them if its ok to send a ball to get signed.

LOL its not voodoo I cast. Mike Singletary, who I liked as a kid, refused me and signed for plenty of people. He refused me, a wounded veteran, twice. So, the 49ers had 2 losing seasons and he lost his job. Jim Harbaugh, who signed for me twice, is now their coach. Maybe they'll pick it up.
As far as asking, I always do so I don't chance offending, obligating or imposing on anyone. I send a "feeler" out with a usually worthless card and simply ask if and how much if any. Suprisingly enough, I only have had to pay 3 times, which is good since I work at a Hardees supporting 5 kids. I began TTM as therapy for mental illnesses from combat situations. Not only did it work, but I also have gotten well over a thousand, and most are doubles. I like to get a great variety of things signed, from cards and balls, to antiqued and theme items. I have an Undefeated Dolphin ball I'm working on getting signed by 13 of the team including Don Shula; a Cowboys legacy ball signed by 3 so far; 2 1954 Hutch Johnny Lattner "toy" football helmets and a set of shoulder pads all signed by him. They're displayed with his actual rookie card. I do this to honor those who honor me. Chadallen985, thank you for your support. If there ever is an autograph museum, your collection would be a wonderful asset to it. I'm a general fan of the games. Not really favorite teams but I enjoy a good game played. I always root for the underdog (GO LIONS!). Mine is a modest collection compared to yours, but 18 balls signed by 32 players (so far. I have 3 out) isn't too shabby for just a year. I include even players who are just a footnote in sports history, but still, they made their mark. How many people ask Bob Aspromonte for his autograph, much less buy a new ball just for him and his brother to sign. They did along with an 8x10 of each and cards of each. Bob even sent and signed a scan of his cards. I also make a lot of handmade things that are pretty worthless to anyone but me.

Hi mrgoo1 :)

Thank you for your feedback {up}

Would you have a scan of the envelope you received please?
If so, you are in the run for the $10 gift certificate.
