I met him in-person in 2007. He was actually in line to hear a speech from Norman Mailer. I'm pretty sure he got Norman's autograph too.
It was a book signing for Norman, in the area where Patch lives or works.

The next day he was at a book store, again it seemed as a fan more than a celebrity. It was Mike Farrell's book tour (Mike was the director the Patch movie and they remained friends). Patch did some shopping at the store, sat down for Mike's speech and at the end of the event Patch took photos and did sign autographs (his chapter of Mike's book). Not sure how many he signed, didn't seem like too many asked.

I sent my photos of us together and wound up getting them unsigned with a note, similar to yours, in a book he sent on his own dime.
He's a character, no doubt, a very special person. I guess he feels he is not a celebrity and in some way I agree with that. He's definitely much more to humanity than a simple celebrity.

You definitely got a cool success!

Hi Markd :)

Thank you for your feedback {up}

When did you receive it please?

Would you have a scan of the envelope you received?
If so, you are in the run for the $10 gift certificate.

Dr. Patch Adams is a physician and social activist who founded the Gesundheit! Institute in 1971 with the goal of integrating traditional medicine with alternative medicine as well as performing arts, crafts, nature, agriculture, and recreation. One of the continued missions of the Gesundheit! Institute involves the concept of "humanitarian clowning", each year organizing a group of volunteers from around the world to travel to various countries where they dress as clowns in an effort to bring humor to orphans, patients, and other people. He was the subject of the 1998 comedy Patch Adams starring Robin Williams.

Dr. Adams is known for rarely signing autographs, so I didn't have high hopes for hearing back from him. However, after just 15 days, I received my photo back in my SASE with an inscription and his trademark # symbol. He also included a form letter explaining that he didn't sign autographs, but hand wrote at the bottom that he's not even sure why he signed my photo. Whatever the reason, I'm certainly glad he did!
