You say at the counter in the post office 1st class airmail. They weigh it and then tell you how much it is to send. Simple as...
Ensure you have your IRC's enclosed for a reply and a return adressed envelope [unstamped] and big enough to accomodate whatever your asking for/ sending out to be signed.
Easy really, ensure you get a reciept from the clerk, as they may ask if it's of any value what you're sending out.

On the envelope you sent out it'll be first class UK stapms on it, just tell the Post Office you'd like to send Air Mail to America, or whatever country.
For the celeb to reply to you (your self addressed envelope) you can either send them 2 x IRCs (internaltion reply coupons) or you can put American stamps on it; so that they can send back to you with no cost to them.
I use to use IRCs but they are expensive, I think it's best to purchase US stamps from someone.
Hope that was of help to you!

Depends if it was a sub post office, as some don't stock them. Go in town to your main post office next time.
