Dear Lily
I’m attaching a photo I was able to take with you and a friend last month at the womens march. I do that as I believe we are on the same side. I am abhored by what is going on with the present administration and I take action. I know that you do as well. I love you for that.
There is one thing I beg for you to consider in your fight to right the many wrongs, and that is your position on Zoo’s and in particular Billy. I feel your heart has been mislead in this case and would hope that you will hear me out.
First let me tell you something of my heart and how it has led me to see the value of zoo’s.
I am a huge supporter of REWILDING (Cores, connectivity, and carnivores) exp. Wolves re-entry back into Yellowstone is one small example of a big win for the whole of natures ecosystems.
I am a huge supporter of one organization in particular IAPF International Anti Poaching Foundation. Damien Mander the Founder (you would adore him) as a new approach to stopping the hideous slaughter of animals, trains women in the field to do the task and they are doing it. And doing it well.
I too support sancutary’s. There is one in particular that keeps a most endangered GREAT APE safe, the Bonobo. They also have a re-release back into the wild. An arduous, lofty endevor and they are succeeding with the help of the community. Lola ya Bonobo is based in Kinshasa-the Capital of DRC a very dangerous place at the moment, their work is extraordinary.
So what does this all have to do with Zoo’s? In another world, where our species could actually learn to live with each other peacably along with all the other fauna as well, maybe sanctuaries and zoo’s would be an anomaly. Unfortunately, many of the really wealthy don’t value land, or people or the living things on it unless it draws them a profit. We are now living in a very fractured and shrinking world, where nature takes a deminished role. We as a species have been severed from it.
More people go to Zoo’s each year than to sporting events. The billion dollar industry of sports has less attendees than Zoos. Why? It is my belief that we long to be reconnected to nature. Children who are lucky to see grass, or the ocean, ever!, come to see for the first time and maybe the only time, animals that inhabit the planet along with them. And they fall in love with them, and they join the fight to conserve them. The zoos conservation efforts are many and they are successful.
The California Condor projects. ( Lead has been re-allowed back into bullets- we won and lost -not giving up on that NRA battle) There were less than 20 There are now 446. The Los Angeles Zoo is a partner in that successful breeding and reintroduction of these rare and wonderful birds.
Each year the Los Angeles Zoo raises more that 30-50 thousand dollars to send to help try to save the critically endangered Rhino’s. (IUCN Internations Union for Conservation- Red list)
The Penisular Pronghorn restoration and reintroduction program. The list is long and the Zoo over the years has spent time, money and done much research to work to keep endangered species alive and healthy. Because of the qualified staff and the ongoing research as well as the International connections of shared knowledge of AZA and ZOO’s, many animals will be kept from the brink of extenction.
Zoo’s are Noahs Arks. Zoo’s are what help teach children the value of something other than themselves. Zoo’s are vital in this world now. Until our species can learn to stop it’s rapacious colonizing of every inch of the planet for itself and share, we need zoo’s and sanctuary’s and conservation efforts. And so Billy, who is a marvelous ambassador, who sniffs and loves to flirt with the old gals that were retired from their aweful circus life, loves the zoo staff.
Please Lily, come for a behind the scene tour. Meet the keepers and curators and volunteers and Docents. Know that these animals get the best veterinary care and love. Talk to Betty White, call me 626-833 7877
Join me in the battle to extend land and resources for the animals that are still wild. If people put money towards zoo’s and land habitat the way they do ruining it. I.E. Standing Rock, Bears Ears the oceans coasts now opened for drilling, God help the sea life, then Zoo’s would look a whole lot different.
P.S. Love Grace and Frankie. and I couldn't figure out how to post our women's march picture
Warmly Sandi Cruze
