Proposition 8 passes in California
While it was a great day for most Americans, yesterday signified a step backward for the LGBT movement with Proposition 8 passing in California, effectively banning same-sex marriage in the state.
I can't express enough my disappointment, regret and shock at this decision. The thing that bothers me most is that the conservative outcome is believed to have been brought upon by the influx of African-American voters and Hispanic voters voting for Obama, who disagree with gay marriage. Why would groups of people who have been subjected to discrimination, pass a bill, that would only inflict the very same discrimination on another group of people? It really saddens me, as I thought America was finally beginning to embrace same-sex marriage, and grant them the rights that they deserve.
A real shame.

Re: Proposition 8 passes in California
As I think others have proposed before on this board, I'm pretty much a strong Catholic Republican, and while I cannot say that I support the religious ceremonies of gays/lesbians, I support the whole civil-union/state marriage thing. It baffles me why people would vote for Obama/Biden, since to my knowledge most of the gays swung that way (probably only because he's a democrat!), especially since Biden does not support gay marriage, I'm unfamilar where Obama stands on the issue; but Palin actually imposed these laws in Alaska if I'm correct. It is a shame about this though; again, I'm not saying it's morally right to have the whole religion added to it, but why should two people who are in love who live in the same residence not be allowed to be considered a "union" and share the same rights that married couples have? But it does appear that while they had made great progress during the past 4 years, this election sent just about everything (from this to the economy!) way back. It's unfortunate though!

Re: Proposition 8 passes in California
I come from Ireland, and I have a ton of family in San Francisco, as a lot of my family emigrated there in the 60's/70's/90's.
Here in Ireland, we really look to America for example. Presently gays/lesbians have virtually no rights here. Suicide is highest among young men, and a reasonable amount of these suicides have been attributed to men being afraid to come out to friends and family. Here, being gay still holds certain negative connotations amongst older people, like my father, due to abuse suffered by children at the hands of Catholic priests, particularly young boys. I used to have a friend, and he came out as gay, when he was 16. He suffered a lot of bullying, and had to develop a very thick skin. As a result, I believe he became a nastier person carrying a chip on his shoulder. This is the kind of country Ireland is. But you guys in the States hold a huge amount of influence on us. I am certain that if non-religious same-sex marriages that granted same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples were embraced in the States, Ireland would follow suit, and introduce legislation to protect same-sex couples.
America was making so much progress, and now with Propostion 8 being passed, the movement has regressed. In a country whose foundations are built on freedoms, a country who proved last night that they are prepared to elect a president, regardless of race, it's sad that a minority have to experience discrimination.

Unfortunately, your decision cannot be based on one topic alone, so compromises have to be made. It must be judged on your entire view of the policies of each running team.TheScarletPimpernel wrote:It baffles me why people would vote for Obama/Biden, since to my knowledge most of the gays swung that way (probably only because he's a democrat!), especially since Biden does not support gay marriage, I'm unfamilar where Obama stands on the issue; but Palin actually imposed these laws in Alaska if I'm correct.
It's an incredible shame that this has passed.

I am incredibly upset that it passed, but they were saying that it would go to the Supreme Court and hopefully they'll overturn the decision. I really don't understand people's reasoning sometimes. Regardless of what anyone says it is discrimination, and I should know this as I am one who's discriminated against in this case....*sigh* looks like I won't be getting married in California....

Saturday is the National Protest Day against Proposition 8. If you're against it, and there's a protest near you I urge you to attend. That's where I'll be spending my Saturday.

Re: Proposition 8 passes in California
The passing of Proposition 8 absolutely disgusts me. I get furious whenever people oppose gay marriage rights, or any rights for that matter. I have never heard one valid argument opposing it. Many people think it is unethical, which I just don't understand. Many are against it because they're Catholic (But newsflash! You don't have to agree with everything your church says. Do you agree that women can't become priests?!). And some ignorant people just say that it makes them uncomfortable to see two guys or two girls making out.
Why on Earth would you want to deny someone the sanctity of marriage? Why would you want to deny someone the chance to find true happiness? If you think living together is good enough, why don't you do it? Why don't you just move in with someone and adopt a kid?
Keith Olberman is known for his "Special Comments." Here is one I highly recommend.

I can't agree more. I'm for gay marriage; I mean, if you're with the one that you love, then what's so disgusting about that?
