Sent Alan Bean a nice letter, 5x7 photo, $20 (all I can afford right now), and SASE a couple weeks ago. Letter, photo, money all returned- Photo unsigned. As a space fan, I'm disappointed... I woulda loved adding him to my collection. It was worth a shot, and maybe my feedback + rejection will save someone from wasting $$$ on postage. Sent to:

Re: Alan Bean NASA Rejection!
Bean's fee is way more than $20. It's 10x that ($200) base for a signed photo. I realize that's all you can afford; best bet is to try and catch him at a speaking event (NOT a signing show) or one of his book signings, if he does a future book - there's no guarantees he'll sign at a speaking event, and no guarantees either that he'll sign more than his book(s) at a book signing.
Also, for future reference, Google what an astronaut's fee may be. Sometimes you'll get lucky - years ago, way long ago, I didn't know Pete Conrad charged and I got a signed index card for free (this was when internet was at its infancy.) But more likely, if they have a fee, they won't sign for less than that.
