Post by lutherjw »

NBA legend Michael Jordan will become part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats RLJ Companies announced Thursday. RLJ is the holding company for Bobcats owner Robert (Bob) Johnson’s companies.

Jordan will now be the second largest minority owner of the Bobcats second only to Johnson.

In a one on one phone interview with 6NEWS Johnson said he and Jordan have been friends for about 17 years. Johnson said he always wanted Jordan to be part owner of the Bobcats from the beginning. Johnson said he tried to get the six-time NBA champion on board, but it didn’t happen. Johnson said Jordan was seeking to buy and NBA team, but the opportunity didn’t happen.

Jordan was approached by Johnson again about buying into the Bobcats a month and a half ago, Johnson said, this time Jordan agreed.

Jordan will carry the title of “Managing Member of Basketball Operations.” Johnson said that title means “the owner responsible for all basketball decision making in terms of player personnel.”

Jordan’s duties will also include providing direction and guidance for the team and the coach.

Johnson pointed out that Jordan is not an employee and will not be a player. He also said that Jordan will not buy him out and that he will always be the majority owner.

Johnson did not release any information about the financial details. Jordan will have is own office Johnson said, but he did not know how much time Jordan would be spending in Charlotte.

6NEWS asked if Jordan had talked about any lessons he learned while working for the Washington Wizards. Johnson said “Nah, he doesn’t like to talk about the Wizards."
