ive never had a problem with my glossy photos smudging or bubbling... but trading cards do it really bad sometimes... so what i do most of the time is scan my trading card, print it and use that (usually 4x6 or 5x7 depending how it turns out)

if i wanted a trading card signed i would just buy an authentic one off ebay but thats just me

You dont have to erase a photo regardless if its matte or glossy.

Erasing is only needed on some brands trading cards, because of the type of gloss they put on it.

Do NOT rub down a glossy photo. Only rub down glossy baseball cards. I have never had a photo bubble up on me. I have had cards bubble up though. Do not use the cheap erasers because they can result in a filmy smudge on them. Use the Pentel eraser or the Staedtler Mars Plastic erasers. You don't have to bear down too hard, just give it a little bit of pressure and rub it down a few times. If you do get a bit of a smudge, use a soft cloth to wipe it down and it should be fine.

Some people use baby powder instead of an eraser. It does not leave a smudge but it can get messy.

An alternative to rubbing down/powdering the cards is to use a Staedtler medium point marker instead. They can be hard to find. Check out the arts and crafts stores in your area, that's usually where they are. The fine point tends to be rather thin for my taste, almost like a pen. But if you can live with that, they are easier to find. I think Staples might carry them, but I'm not sure. I have never heard of those markers bubbling up, although a few folks have mentioned that it is a good idea to lightly rub down chrome cards as a precaution.

Here's an example of a card that bubbled up on me because I forgot to rub it down:

some of the wwe cards are way to glossy and the maker will bubble like you guys are talking about 2009 and newer (some newer ones aren't glossy at all tho). Lucky for me when I sent my cards to Mickie Jame's only one was glossy and bubbled the other 2 are fine :) so what I would do is see if you can find any of the ones that aren't glossy and send them but if all you have is glossy the easer trick does work but make sure you get the right one or it will not work right

I'm a bit afraid of the eraser thing, to be honest. I'm afraid I'd ruin the card because I don't know how to properly do it.
Can you elaborate on the baby powder idea?

I had about 5 or 6 glossy cards signed at the Legends of the Ring convention this past weekend and all came out great after just a little rubbing. Hector Guerrero and Dutch Mantell were even warning me that they may not come out well, but they could not have come out better.

I usually don't do too many glossy cards, but for some it was all that was really out there for them to sign (TNA's Chelsea) or they were just cards I really wanted done.

My friend had the Topps 09 Tony Atlas card signed, and Tony went into a story about how Vince puts the coating on the cards so they can't be signed. Tony's a treasure. :-) My friend had rubbed it previously and it turned out awesome.

I've never seen an issue with signing glossy photos.

I have never done it myself, but have seen two other people do it. What they did was to sprinkle a little bit of powder onto the face of the card, gently stir it around with a finger, and then wipe the card clean with a soft cloth. I could not even tell it had been rubbed down after they were through. In both cases this was done outside so that the powder wound up all over the ground. I don't know what one would do if they powdered thier cards indoors.

So you don't figure the baby-powder idea would work too well?
I'm buying cards individually specifically for the purpose of sending them TTM. I collect rookie cards (typically not a problem being too glossy, as many of them are slightly older) and "memoribilia" cards (cards with a game-used jersey swatch, piece of baseball bat or football etc), which generally are newer and typically seem to be pretty glossy.
I'm trying to find a youtube video or something showing a good technique with the eraser on a card, I really don't want to do damage to the card because I'm a newjack.

I use baby powder on the cards before I send them out. It is easy and it works great. You do exactly what the previos person said. You take a little bit of baby powder on the card and rub it all over, than you wipe it off when your done. After you do it you can't even tell the powder was on it, and it doesn't do anything to the card.
