Joseph Kilps graduated from Washington High School in 1941. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in September 1942. He was selected to be a radio operator. In 1943 he was shipped to England in preparation for the D Day landing in France. He was assigned to the "Ghost Army" that was intended to make the Germans think the allies were landing at Calais, France rather than Normandy. His job was to send fake radio messages. In July 1944 he was transferred to France as part of a radio unit that followed the U.S. Army into Germany.
