John Lewis was a civil rights leader who served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement as one of the original Freedom Riders of 1960 and was a key organizer, and is the last living speaker, of the 1963 March on Washington. He was also one of the leaders of the Selma to Montgomery Marches where he was savagely beaten and had his skull fractured during the day that would become known as 'Bloody Sunday'. In 1987, he was elected to the United States Congress representing Georgia and has served as Chief Deputy Whip of the Democratic Caucus since 1991.
He signed the photo I sent him and returned it to me in 49 days.
