I tend to think of how I'd feel if I received business mail at my home from strangers asking me to do something for them. I wouldn't like it, but then again I acknowledge that I'm an abnormally private person. Therefore, I do not send autograph requests to home addresses. That's just me, and I don't make statements as to what someone else might do once through the mail to try to receive an autograph.
I aspire to be an author. At my age I'm getting a really late start because I got derailed. I really hate to think of ever receiving any acclaim that would draw media attention to me. Could it be that some people--perhaps famous actors and actresses--just wanted to do a job that they enjoy and didn't really welcome the fame and media scrutiny? Or maybe they thought that they'd enjoy the fame, but when people started digging through their trash trying to come up with a story or snapping cameras when they're trying to have a family outing that the celeb realized that fame isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Unless we know the celeb personally (which is unlikely) or they get honest in an interview or tell-all book we really can't know how the celeb would feel about getting fanmail at a home address. I think it's up to the fan to judge if it's appropriate to send an autograph request to a particular celeb ONCE (not multiple times) at the home address. Personally, I do think it should be a last effort after every other avenue has been tried--like the OP said it was in this instance.
But this arguing isn't serving anyone. I wish it'd end. I don't think anyone is going to change their policy because of it.
I see what you are saying. People should not have their trash gone through and people hiding in the bushes taking pictures of them. I think people who do that are idiots and the show TMZ is a big part of the problem with that kind of thing. However, I don't think I would have a problem with some people sending me some pictures to sign (my opinion). I get tons of junk mail where I live right now. I don't freak out about it, I just look at it or throw it away. If the person wants to trash my pictures, oh well, that is the chance I took sending it to their home (now I will know their character). This is a topic that people are just not going to agree on. For some people I do think there is a bit of hypocracy on this subject (not you).
I do know one thing that Martin Sheen is not the guy I thought he was. I don't believe in some of his politics after he protested the base I worked on when I was in the military. I sent him a LOR (stated military status just to see what might happen) with PICS to his home address and he is by far the nicest guy I have gotten a response from (which he does for most people). He completely changed my view of him. He probably realizes that without the fans he would not have what he has today. TTM is by far the least intrusive way fans can connect with them, even if it is their home address.
P.S. I wish I could take this off my topics page. It is like watching a train wreck.
