Tom Matte Football

Thomas Roland Matte (June 14, 1939 – November 2, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a running back for the Baltimore Colts in the National Football League (NFL)[. Selected in the first round (7th overall) of the 1961 NFL Draft by the Colts, Matte played his entire career in Baltimore from 1961 to 1972. He was known for his versatility, stepping in as an emergency quarterback during the 1965 season when Johnny Unitas and Gary Cuozzo were injured. Matte was a key part of the Colts’ offense, contributing both as a rusher and receiver out of the backfield.

Matte’s best season came in 1969 when he rushed for 909 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and helped lead the Colts to victory in Super Bowl V.
