Autograph reference books of all collecting fields

Unread post by R.S.V.P »

Here's a list of some very good literature for those of you who want to get seriously started collecting autographs.

Advanced Autograph Collecting (by Mark Allen Baker)
Autograph collecting has boomed, but with the hobbys growth have come more pitfalls and more opportunities for collectors. Here is a book that offers a logical roadmap to this hobby: how to obtain the signatures you treasure most, how to identify fakes and forgeries, and how to avoid paying too much for autographs. Mark Allen Bakers book covers all the priority collecting topics. He shares valuable tips on recognizing autopens, the impact of technology on the rare document market, handling and caring for rare paper, and what you need to know to avoid costly mistakes. This information should help collectors expand their knowledge. There is also a chapter devoted to the sports memorabilia boom.

The American Antiquarian New York 1870-1872 (compiled and reprinted by Stephen Koschal)
The first ten issues compiled and reprinted by Stephen Koschal.

New York August 1870-1872

The autograph fraternity is indeed grateful to Steve Koschal for sharing contents of Charles De Forest Burn's pioneer publication. The American Antiquarian. I must confess that I had never heard of Burns or seen his journal before Steve made this important discovery. As a forerunner to Walter Benjamin's The Collector is is extremly important because it reflects the thoughts of a still earlier generation of autograph enthusiasts. It is "must" reasing for all dealer and collectors.

Great Forgers and Famous Fakes (by Charles Hamilton)
Charles Hamilton recognizes a faked signature and believes it to be easily identified, and so will the reader of this book-once he knows what to look for. This is information of immense value to the collector and historian. Well-executed forgeries and fakes have fooled dealers and collectors for more than a century. This thoroughly documented book, containing hundreds of examples that show how to identify the best that the most skillful forgers have produced, will provide the expert and the amateur with tools for self-protection. Great Forgers and Famous Fakes is also a chronicle of the careers of America's most adroit and colorful manuscript forgers, telling who they were and how they swindled their victims. The fascinating stories of forgers and their works include: -the poet who forged hundreds of Robert Frost manuscripts -the multimillionaire industrialist and founder of RCA who got his start as a forger-and years later got fooled by his own fake -the A! merican Nazi who forged John Howard Payne's "Home, Sweet Home" -a round-dozen forgers of Abe Lincoln's handwriting.

Hardcover: 294 pages
Publisher: Glenbridge Publishing, Ltd.; 2nd Rev edition (April 1996)

There are much more books that I could recommend, so if you have any questions or enquiries please do not hesitate to ask.

For those of you who don't know Charles Hamilton yet he's THE Godfather for all autograph collectors worldwide.

Best,
Stephan
