It's a long story. It originated as a Japanese show called Sentai or Super Sentai which basically translates as task force. Haim Saban had traveled there and saw Sentai for himself and he thought it would make a good American show. The original plan was to order 40 episodes for the first season and...

Funnily enough we are the same age and I was also obsessed with Power Rangers. I only just threw out my old figures the other week, had I known I could have saved them for you!
