Musicfan, they are trying to help and have given you information on why the amount you used wasn't enough, and several suggestions on how to ensure you have enough (checking USPS website, taking it to a post office etc). There is no need to get defensive.

I assume it's just to differentiate between surface mail. Technically they should be able to tell which you want by the amount you've paid, but it's always best to specify, I think :)
