It is hard! I've had the best successes looking up articles on google news about the filming location. Sometimes the articles will mention a specific location (perhaps a museum, bank, or other location) that is not necessarily a production company and I will send it there.
When googling make sure you include the name of the city in quotes like this "Los Angeles, CA" and the movie title or production company
Try to find the local film office's website and see if they have listings. Canada has very well-publicized listings. Sometimes you have to call for an address.
But sometimes I hit a wall as well.
The holy grail is productionweekly.com, but there is a subscription. They have a free sample issue that is a few months old, and some of the addresses might work.
I have a few other hints and links on my website.
