Not that it'll completely prevent it, but I put my photos in sheet protectors to lessen damage. Of course, sometimes the celebrity gets mixed up and signs the protector and not the photo....

Sent LOR, Photos, and SASE on 1/28/2016 to addy in database, received his own photo today, 2/16/16, signed. He added a note saying that my letter and photos were water damaged due to the rain.
