I just had my picture returned with the $20 I had sent, and there was a note saying "As of 01/01/2014 it is now $50"

Wow.
I never had an issue with him charging, because he had some serious tax problems a few years back (to the point that he opened his house for tours to get money to live on) & I don't know that he ever got paid off. And royalties work differently for music produced in the mid-60's and earlier, so I'm not sure that he actually has an income.
That said, I think a $50 per fee is a bit steep and counter productive (he'd make a lot more money with the lower fee, just as it's easier to make $100 selling chocolate bars if you sell 100 for $1 each than if you sell 1 for $100). And scamming people is just ludicrous. They aren't technically "selling" them, so I don't know that it's necessarily illegal, but if it's true, I'm glad they're discouraging people from writing by raising the fee.
I wrote to him back when he was signing for free, and, unfortunately, got it back in the "stamp" end of the hill.
Does Jerry Lee have arthritis? I feel like I heard that somewhere, which would explain why he doesn't sign, but it doesn't excuse the actions.
