You're clearly looking at this from a blinkered viewpoint, so it's pointless continuing. If you think it's acceptable to expect celebrities to pay for postage, provide envelopes etc, that's your call, regardless of their decision at their end, you are expecting it because otherwise you wouldn't send the letters

Those not coming back, with or without SASE's etc, that's part of the game... if you don't understand not everything comes back then this is the wrong hobby for you Yes, some do go out of their way to help, some are very nice and go above and beyond. Some don't.

And again, your maths is comical...if someone is on that much money per season etc then they will get a LOT more letters than that. That being said, it doesn't matter... YOU don't have the right to expect THEY pay for you to get signed items.

It's a simple formula.. make it simple for the celeb to reply, you get a lot more responses.

You've got a lot of ranting there but none of it really strays from the base of the whole situation, fans/collectors/whoever who don't provide return postage tend to give everyone else a bad name, and runs the risk of frustrating the celebrity in question.

Once again. The artist has a right NOT to reply. In my letter I'm just kindly asking for an autograph. If an artist HIMSELF thinks it's unacceptable to ask without paying for the reply postage, I don't expect him to send me my photos back. It's always up to him to decide.
Moreover, a lot of those, who receive a letters VV with the already paid envelopes do not reply - that's a fact!

The same applies to the e-mail requests.

I will tell you even more. In December I sent 4 letters to Russia. I provided special reply envelopes (valid for Russia only) which are smaller, so they didn't influence the weight of the letter (i.e. it was still up to 20 g) and signed them of course, but the return address was also in Russia (at my friend's), because the reply-envelopes are valid only in Russia. Moreover, it was in the one and the same city - both the celeb and my friend to get the reply.
No reply was received until today.

On the other hand, I've e-mailed to one celeb's office to ask for a postal address, but her manager offered me to e-mail her the pics I'd like to sign, printed them HERSELF, signed them at the celeb and mailed me back. The letter is still in mail, so I should get it in some days.
Well..... everything happens...

I also e-mailed to ask for a address to one singer. His sec told me he's on tour now, asked for my address and told me, he will sign and personalize the pics they already have, but I will need to wait until he's back from the tour. She therefore didn't want my pics or envelope.... People take it more easy. Even Aaron Taylor-Johnson is reported to send out HIS OWN envelopes and postage and not to use the IRCs people send him..... 0_o, strange, huh?

And I also would like to say, that a lot of artists don't like big crowds of fans. Well.... it's their choice. Being a celeb means, that you will have to deal with fans, or nobody will be interested in you. Do you know, how much money do celebs pay in order to have their photos mailed from SFM? They not only pay '88p' for a letter, but also print cards (and they are of a very good quality, it's not that 0,10 cent pics from your local super-market) AND pay the people, who send these cards out to those, who request. I believe, that Mrs. Stubbs, in my example, is in much more better conditions. I also believe, that it's always a pleasure to receive a hand-written letter from somebody, who loves what you're doing.

And the last one: not everything is measured with money. Even if some celeb sends ca. 50 letter out each month, he will spend 44 pounds (45 incl. envelopes, which costs almost nothing). Big deal, if he gets paid a hundred of thousands per season or millions per film....

because it's an extra weight. In Germany normal letters are up to 20 gr and cost 0,75 eur. If I include an envelope, the weight and therefore costs of a letter will be multiplied. As a self-funded not-working student I won't be able to send out the letters, which cost ca. 3 eur. I send such letters only if I write VV as an artist may not go out and buy an envelope.
I don't think its rude. It's the right of the artist or his manager not to reply me if they want an envelope or think it's rude.
I go to the cinema and buy ticket. I buy DVDs and Blue-Rays. Don't you think, that spending 88p for a letter from the UK to DE is ok for those few, who write them? Anyway, I took my time, wrote a letter, printed photos (and didn't ask to send me theirs) - may I receive a reply? We're all humans and not everything should be measured with money.

On the other hand, I think it's rude to print the letters and not write them in hand.
I also think it's rude, when you write a letter to an artist you adore, and they send you a PP or write that they don't have time to sign photos. They just don't care and that is rude indeed. Dame Judi Dench doesn't have time, but he signs everyone and everything. She's a great woman!!!! Other artists send pre-signed pics, and that is better, than PPs. It will take only an hour to sign more than 1000 photos and them send them out - that would be more polite, than redirect the fan mail to the SFM.......

Rude is like Jeremy Irons to ask 25 USD for an autograph. He's a very rich man and if someone adores his work and ask just for an autograph, why not to sign and mail him back? I think Katey Sagal is rude. She makes ca. 150.000 USD per season in Sons of Anarchy. Do you know she sells her signatures for 25 bucks on her official site? ***? Is she that poor, that her fans need to may 25 bucks to get a signature? That is rude, I believe.

I understand the financial constraints, but I am firmly in the camp where I think it's rude not to provide return postage for a request when you are asking a favour of someone, regardless of their celebrity status, and even ruder to not even include a return envelope with your address on it. I would have thought this would lead to a higher chance of money being wasted in sending out requests which don't come back.

You make comment on that 88p cost to send to you... sure... that's ONE letter. If every person who sends a letter to Una (as the current example) who has become rather more popular in recent years due to Sherlock didn't provide postage, do you have any idea what the total would be? No one has the right to expect a celebrity to spend that amount of money on responding to fanmail. Judi Dench is one of the few who does, but just because she does, does not give the right to us as fans to demand everyone does.

As for the rest of the rant about PPs etc, yeah, sure, it's frustrating, but in no way relevant to my comments.

As for "more than 1000" signed photos in an hour... funny idea.

Una Stubbs – British actress, known as Mrs. Hudson in 'Sherlock' BBC TV Series

Una Stubbs
Rebecca Blond Associates
69a Kings Road
London SW3 4NX, UK

Sent [uk]: 18 Jan 2014 - LOR + 2 photos
Received [germany]: 1 Feb 2014 - 2 photos (1 personalized signes, 1 signed)

Take a closer look on the envelope. The "Airmail" is funny written with blue pencil
AND my name on the envelope and on the photo is written with one hand.
1) Does it mean, the actress signs the envelopes as well?
2) Does it mean, I've got secretarial?

Thanks!
