I'd guess he has so many requests now that he never bothers opening letters.
They see a big envelope and assume it's an auto request, so he just writes the sender's first name on some pre-signed pics and an assistant sends it back.
Which is still nice, but it'd be nice to send the original envelope back with our items.

Yes, I did not get my photo back. Which is no big deal to me, since I print my own, but I'm sure some folks send DVD covers and things they'd like back!
