During his playing days he was nicknamed "Bam-Bam", after the eponymous character from The Flintstones, for his tackling and physicality.

Could you have better success if you write there to Ian? I sent an old Stone Roses ticket and maybe it was considered not an acceptable choice - or perhaps he doesn't sign by mail. Without a note, I cannot say much on the direct reason.
